Thu, March 11, 2004 - 10:23 AMYeah, I love all the Swans different 'phases'. I really like the earlier stuff alot though - Slow and depressing. You should check out the 'Great Annihilator' CD. It's their second to last album and it's like a combination of the early sound and the more beautiful mid-period stuff.
They're gone now, but Michael Gira and Jarboe are still very active in other bands. Jarboe just released a record with Neurosis btw.
I should have mentioned Neurosis as a favorite band, but some people don't consider them Doom.

Yeah the name CS is pretty lame as well as their later albums but, their solar lovers album is really good. Have you heard of Offium Triste? A dutch band, My previous band(Asunder) was offered a dual release with them last year.You ureally gotta check out Saturnus, Evoken, Mourning beloveth, Orodruin, and Morgion. -

As an aside...
I am living in London for the time being, and I recently went to some "underground" record shop in Camden and asked after some doom bands. After texting copiusly on his Nokia, the clerk finally *deigned* to look up and tell me that he'd never heard of the bands that I mentioned. He stared at me like I was crazy, as if to say "if I haven't heard of it, then it doesn't exist". So I thought that I'd ask him about something he would know about, which was the new Judas Priest album. He said (in quite a steely tone) "We only sell 'underground' music here." He was sporting a metallica t-shirt. I thought it was safe to assume that I could mention Judas Priest and get away with it, but I was wrong. Why are there so many people in the "metal/hard music scene" that are so stunted in either mind or attitude? There is such fragmentation amongst us. So many genres, yet we get lumped together with people like this snobby clerk, socially.
Ok, sorry about the Diatribe, especially if I offended people, but I am in a lousy mood. Grrr. -
